Counseling is about change and as you start out, there is often a feeling of vulnerability. Your strengths and weaknesses become more clearly apparent. But as you stretch yourself toward making improvements you find you won't need past “security blankets” as much. You begin to look to look at how you can make a positive change. The energy spent on self doubt can transform itself into energy that considers and explores opportunities.
Our work together is confidential. Confidentiality is part of the trust needed for counseling. What you say to me is kept between us. If a client is a child, a parent can expect an update on the progress and findings. You can instruct me in writing to provide confidential information from counseling to your doctor, or other professional.
I will require that you do homework between our appointments to keep the counseling process going. This may include reading and recording your own progress in a journal. Or, we may conduct experiments to prove or disprove a belief in your ability to learn. I often ask a student to teach me something, as that gives a wonderful glimpse into your unique style of learning.
You can expect that I will give you "reality checks" as we explore ways for you to get where you want to be in your life of learning. You can count on me being on ‘your side' as you progress from feelings of “I can't” into growing into “I CAN”!!!!! And that is SUCCESS!
